Unfortunately, MHL hockey is over in Campbellton for this season because, as it turned out, all that the Tiger players had in their tanks was enough for one more period of hockey. Apparently, playing so hard and so well against Woodstock up to this point in the series took its toll. But what a period it was. Chris Caissy’s short handed breakaway goal and Francis Bernier’s hard wrister off the inside of the post both gave the Tigers the lead but it was not to be. The Slammers simply had too many weapons and created too many chances to be denied. Fans showed their appreciation for the efforts of the Tigers by giving the team a standing ovation after the series ending handshakes took place.

Yes, we love hockey in Campbellton. Yes, it is far too early to even think of next season, but it was frequently heard in the stands, that next year… maybe next year… if the season starts with the level of play with which this one ended… just maybe, right? Thanks Tigers. Nice finish… really.

 Grrr!

Although the Woodstock Slammers must be feeling quite confident with a three game lead, they must recall that at least two of their three wins could easily have been losses. They must also realize that given the outstanding performance of the Tigers so far that a series win is not yet in the bag. Surely, they must know that tonight the Tigers will battle tougher than ever and will play their hearts out to avoid the sweep. And, they must realize that if the Tigers scrap their way back into the series, and gain momentum that they will be difficult to stop. At any rate, if the Slammers don’t grasp the situation, Tiger fans certainly do and will be anxious to see the beginning of a Tiger comeback tonight, Friday, March 9th at 8:00 PM. With the Arnold Maisey Tournament on the go this weekend, there will be lots of good hockey for Campbellton fans to enjoy but the highlight will certainly be the Slammers vs Tigers game. Come on down to the Memorial Civic Center and make some noise for the Tigers.

Two power play goals in the first period was all that Tiger goalie, Raphael Roy allowed, but it turned out to be enough for the Slammers to escape with their third win in as many games. The lone goal for the Tigers and the only regular strength score in the game was netted in the second period by Chris Caissy, assisted by MacKenzie Kierstead. Woodstock was the out and out favorite in this series but they never dreamed that they would face such stiff opposition from the Tigers who finished, in the regular season, 53 points behind them. The fact that the Woodstock goalie was the first star for the second time in the series is evidence that the Tigers have been applying lots of pressure on the Slammers. Also an indicator of the Tigers’ vastly improved play is that Woodstock’s second netminder, who, during the regular season started four of the seven Slammer/Tigers games, has not yet made an appearance in this series.

Head coach, Charles LeBlanc, feels that the Tigers are playing their hearts out and deserve a better fate. He added, ” Woodstock are in for another surprise Friday if they think they have won the series. We are going to take it to them right to the end.”

Friday’s game is at the Memorial Civic Center at 8:00 PM. Come on down, cheer on the Tigers and enjoy some great MHL playoff hockey action.

Bon match. Grrr!

Looking to avenge the unfortunate results of Tuesday’s game, the Tigers play tonight at the Carleton Civic Center in the third playoff tilt versus Woodstock. In what many MHL followers thought would be a “no brainer” sweep for the Slammers, a real struggle has developed due to the determined effort of the underdogs, the Tigers. All contenders for the league crown must be watching with interest as Campbellton, although down 2-0 in games, continues to battle throughout each and every period. Tigers’ head coach Charles LeBlanc is very proud of the way the team has played so far in the series.

“The team is playing its best hockey of the year and it’s at the perfect time of the year – the playoffs. We may be down 2-0 in the series but it’s far from over. Woodstock is in for a long hard battle. Not for one minute in this series have we been out played, we just need to keep playing the way we are and eventually the bounces will roll our way.”

Game time tonight is 7:30 PM. Starting at that time, you can follow game developments on the MHL website.

Even though shots-on-goal totals favor the Slammers, the Tigers had more quality shots and scoring chances than the visitors and it started early in the first frame. The Memorial Civic Center was rocking when penalty killer, Stephen Groom, intercepted a pass and broke in alone to put one past the Woodstock goalie. The lead lasted until near the end of the first when the Slammers capitalized on the second Tiger trip to the sin bin. Woodstock jumped into the lead early in the second but that was erased by a classic Chris Caissy goal near the end of the period. Assists went to Frankie Hart and Francis Bernier. The last period tightened up as both teams knew that one mistake could result in a loss. But it was not an error, but simply Lady Luck that dealt the Tigers a miserable blow. After playing an assertive game and applying pressure for much of the game the Tigers lost out when Woodstock got a couple of extremely fortunate bounces with less than two minutes to go in the game and ended up with a 3-2 victory. Tiger supporters left the rink disappointed with the loss but very proud of the gritty effort of their team.

The series returns to Woodstock for game three Wednesday night and then back to the friendly confines of the Memorial Civic Center on Friday, March 9th at 8:00 PM. This will be a chance for hockey fans to get a great start to their weekend by cheering the Tigers on to victory. See you there!

Bon match. Grrr!

The Tigers are ready to roar tonight when they take on Woodstock in the second game of best-of-seven Meek Division semi-final series. Even though Campbellton came up short in game one, it was a contest that could have gone either way thanks to outstanding net minding at both ends of the ice. The Tigers are planning to turn it up a notch tonight and, with the support of their fans, will strive to even up the series. So, gather together family and friends and come on down to the Memorial Civic Center and make some noise for the home town Tigers. Game time is 7:30 PM. GO TIGERS GO!

Bon match! Grrr!

Throw in some natural athletic skills, add heaps of determination and effort, stir in large quantities of instruction and practice and voilà – success! To some degree that is correct but, like veteran football coach, Dick Tomey*, Tigers’ head coach, Charles LeBlanc, would have us add to the list the following elements: 1) Belief – in yourself, in your teammates and in your goals; 2) Passion – a desire to succeed that is far more than just “wanting to”; 3) Energy - a positive attitude brimming with optimism; 4) Strategy - a game plan that incorporates all the other elements; and 5) – Teamwork - the work and the rewards must be shared with the whole team. Well, folks, all the Tigers, including the players, coaches, support staff and administration, have toiled hard to put together all that it takes to ice a team capable of playing an entertaining and winning brand of hockey. In Campbellton, everything is now in place… almost. What is still in short supply is that last element, the ingredient that makes all the effort worthwhile. Of course, what we are referring to is fan support and the boost to the team that engaged, cheering fans can provide. Our team can win and you can be part of it. Come to the games, bring a friend or family member , cheer for the home team and show that Campbellton is still a great hockey town.

*For more information on Dick Tomey, refer to this site. http://www.examiner.com/sports-in-honolulu/football-coach-dick-tomey-on-his-5-elements-for-success

Bon match Grrr!

Whether it was a case of “bus legs” or perhaps playoff jitters, Campbellton just couldn’t get flowing in the first frame. The Tigers were able to break through the defensive wall they faced only once when Chris Caissy (slider photo), assisted by Frankie Hart (right photo), potted a goal with a man advantage. However, Raphael Roy (left photo), in the Tigers’ net stopped fourteen of sixteen shots to keep it close. In the second, the Tigers picked up the offensive pace but couldn’t flash the red light while Woodstock extended their lead by two more. During the third period, the defensive struggle continued with only fifteen shots on goal in total and the game ended with the Tigers dropping the first game of the best-of-seven series.

Although the Tigers are disappointed with the result, they have to be encouraged by the fact that the last four games versus Woodstock were close contests that could have gone either way. Tiger fans are confident that the continued hard effort of the Tigers will pay dividends soon. With that in mind, remember to pick up your tickets early for Tuesday’s match at the Memorial Civic Center.

Bon match! Grrr!

Tiger fans have seen many changes over the years because, like in most hockey organizations, players and coaching staff come and go. What the fans might not have noticed however, are the two members of the Tigers support staff who have quietly served the team for a number of seasons.

Equipment manager, George White (right), has been efficiently handling his duties for the past four seasons. When asked what he does, George modestly replied that mostly he just watches the games and cheers on the team. When persuaded to provide a few more details, he admitted to doing slightly more such as sharpening skates, keeping track of sticks, arranging for or performing equipment repair and making sure that the water bottles are full. According to George, what keeps him coming back from year to year is his love of hockey. “When it comes to seeing the game, I have one of the best spots in the rink.”

Since the 2006/2007 season, another regular behind the Tiger bench has been trainer Claude Arseneault (left). Over the years, he has worked with at least ten coaches (head and assistants) plus countless players. Chief amongst his duties is the assessment of player injuries and the application of advanced first aid when needed. People are amazed at what he can do with an ice pack and a roll of tape. With intense practices and tough games being common, Claude finds that he is too busy. If he’s needed at all then he feels, like the rest of the Tiger supporters, that it is too much. “We have a nice bunch of guys out there.” he stated, nodding toward the players at a recent practice, and would rather be cheering for them than helping them off the ice. For most of this season, Claude has been assisted by Emilie Lavoie, who has recently left the team to take advantage of an employment opportunity in Rimouski, PQ.

Speaking of supporting the Tigers, tickets for the playoff games are now available at the Memorial Civic Center box office, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday plus 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays. Get your tickets in advance and avoid the lineups on game nights. Prices are as follows: Adults – $10; Seniors ( 55+) – $8; Students(18 +) – $7; Students(under 18) – $5.

GRRR!

Statistics can be incredible things in the hands of master manipulators. The same set of figures can be used to suggest greatness just as easily as it can be used to promote destruction. One only has to look at any political center for proof of that. However, many stats, especially in sports, can be quite revealing. Such is the case with the two parts of the Tigers’ season, namely September to December, and then, January to February. In the first part of the season, Campbellton was able to scrape together only eighteen points in thirty-four games. There were two stretches, one of eight games and another of nine, in which the Tigers failed to pick up a single point. Then, the metamorphosis occurred and the “new” Tigers emerged, stronger, faster and much more determined to compete. And compete they did, picking up twenty points in eighteen games and earning for themselves and for the fans, a spot in the playoffs. During the last two months of the regular season, the Tigers let only six games, and never two in a row, slip away without picking up at least one point. Head Coach, Charles LeBlanc, has often said that when the Tiger players believe in themselves that they can compete with any team in the league. Well, if the stats mean anything, then there are lots of reasons to believe that we are going to see some exciting Tigers’ playoff hockey soon.

” Bon match. Grrr…
