It is a long way from Campbellton, N.B. to Tampa Bay, Florida. It is even longer if you go via Baie-Comeau,Quebec; Winnipeg, Manitoba.; Peoria, Illinois and Norfolk, Virginia. That was the route taken by former Tiger, Pierre-Cedric Labrie. During the 2005-6 season Labrie had 86 points and a whopping 153 penalty minutes in 54 games for the Restigouche (now Campbellton) Tigers. Labrie then moved to the QMJHL for one season. Since 2007, he has played with four AHL teams including his present club, the Admirals of Norfolk, Virginia. During this time, Labrie was affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks, the St. Louis Blues and, since Dec. 29th, 2011, the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was with the Lightning that Labrie got his big break when on Jan. 6th he got his first call up to the big rinks to face the Montreal Canadiens. To date, Labrie has played in seven games, has had two fights and recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a goal by Martin St. Louis.
In an article on Labrie’s debut in the Tampa Bay Times written by Joe Smith, the Tigers are mentioned as one of Labrie’s steps in his journey to the NHL. Rodney Harquail, the former General Manager of the Tigers, remembers him well. According to Harquail, Labrie had been languishing in a senior league in Quebec and his year with the Tigers really revitalized his interest in hockey. In his second game as a Tiger, Labrie established his reputation as one of the toughest players in the MJAHL (now the MHL). In the games to follow he established his reputation as one of the most skillful players as well. Mr. Harquail recalls that off the ice, Labrie was a “real nice guy”, and, like other Tiger followers, he is delighted to hear of his success.

C’est le chemin qu’a dû prendre l’ancien Tigre, Pierre- Cedric Labrie. À la saison 2005-2006 P.-C. Labrie a accumulé 86 points et 153 minutes de pénalités en 54 parties avec les Tigres du Restigouche dans le temps. Labrie a ensuite joué dans la ligue majeur du Québec pour une saison. Depuis 2007 il a joué avec quatre équipes de la ligue Américaine et fut affilié avec les Canucks de Vancouver et les Blues de St-Louis et depuis le 20 décembre dernier il fait parti des Admirals de Norfork en Virginie. Le 6 janvier dernier, il fut rappellé de son club école pour joindre le Lightning de Tampa Bay pour disputer son premier match contre nul autre que le Canadien de Montréal. Jusqu’à date il a pris part à sept matchs dans la LNH. Agé de 25 ans, l’avant de 6pi. 2po. et 218 livres a participé à deux combats et a inscrit une aide dans un but de Martin St.Louis.
Dans un article dans le Tampa Bay Times, l’on mentionne le Tigre de Campbellton dans le parcour de Pierre-Cedric jusqu’à la LNH. L’ancien gérant des Tigres, Rodney Harquail s’en souvient bien et le décrit comme joueur stagnant dans la ligue majeur du Québec pour environ trois ans avant qu’il rejoigne les Tigres. C’est ici que son intérêt pour le hockey s’est revitalisé. À son deuxième match il se démarqua comme l’un des joueurs les plus rudes de la ligue et peu après ajouta une qualité de finesse à son jeu. Hors glace, il avait la qualité d’être un gentilhomme. On se réjouit du succès que connait Pierre-Cedric Labrie aujourd’hui.
